Reiki, pronounced ray-key, is a holistic healing treatment that originated in Japan and is commonly used in the United States today to alleviate physical ailments and to encourage relaxation as a method of healing. Translated, Reiki means “universal life force energy”, and is founded on the philosophy that a spiritual life force flows through the body giving it life. If this energy is depleted, illnesses and stress will occur. Through the practice known as laying on hands, a Reiki therapist will tap into the life force energy to restore health and quality of life.
The principle of Reiki therapy is that energy blockages in the “chakra,” or energy centers, of the body can be healed by a trained therapist through the gentle placement of hands on strategic parts of a patient’s body, generally over the chakras, which mirror the endocrine system.
During a Reiki session, the patient may lie on a massage table or rest in a chair, fully clothed. In addition to conditions related to stress, Reiki is commonly used to treat symptoms generating from cancer illnesses and treatments, headaches, intestinal disorders, back problems, asthma and respiratory afflictions, menstrual and menopausal symptoms, as well as other afflictions.
