Sample different local yoga instructors in weekly classes that support local charity.  Dr. Kara Burkhart, naturopathic physician and acupuncturist, is offering yoga Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at New England Integrative Health Associates in Bishops Corner.  Dr. Burkhart would like to inspire people to start a regular yoga practice because of the many health benefits, especially stress reduction. See the links below to learn more about how yoga can improve your health. Class will run from May 3 through July 19. Space is limited, so plan to come a few minutes early to reserve a place. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one and water.  Suggested donation of $5 (bring cash, please) will benefit the Backpack Program.

The Junior League of Hartford administers the Backpack Program at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. Each week, 25 backpacks are filled with child-friendly, nonperishable, vitamin-fortified foods for the weekend. The backpacks contain enough food to feed the child for two days and include food for at least one family meal. The backpacks are discreetly distributed to children on Friday afternoons and collected early the following week. In addition to food, the backpacks contain information about how to prepare healthy snacks or meals with the food provided, nutritional tips and non-food items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, pencils, children’s books, hats, mittens, and information on area social services and resources. Because they seek to provide enough food to help feed the participating children’s families in addition to the children themselves, they estimate that the Backpack Program feeds over 125 individuals each weekend.
